Laserfiche today
From Laserfiche's own pages and documentation:
- Two product lines: Laserfiche Cloud, sold in several plans and updated monthly, and self-hosted Laserfiche 12, which Laserfiche describes as its trusted standard with classic capabilities. Laserfiche 12 gets feature updates each spring and fall; the latest installer build is from September 2026.
- The direction is cloud. Laserfiche's migration page says modern operations are on Laserfiche Cloud, and suggests moving to self-hosted Laserfiche 12 if your cloud migration is further out than 2027.
- Cloud is a per-user subscription billed yearly with a minimum number of users. Self-hosted Laserfiche 12 is also sold as a subscription. Older Rio and Avante systems still appear in its licensing documentation.
- Laserfiche is headquartered in Long Beach, California, and works with a network of solution providers as well as some direct customers.
A platform, or a focused system
Laserfiche covers a lot of ground. Its documentation and product pages describe a repository with templates and fields, forms and a no-code process designer, records management with file plans and retention rules, Quick Fields batch capture and Import Agent for watched folders, Smart Fields and other AI features, a public portal for read-only outside access, a mobile app, and connectors to systems such as DocuSign, SAP, Esri ArcGIS, Microsoft 365 and Salesforce. Its records management controls are based on a self-hosted version certified to DoD 5015.2.
That breadth is the reason to choose Laserfiche, and the reason it takes a solution provider and an administrator to run well. Plenty of self-hosted Laserfiche systems are used for a narrower job: scan, index, find, approve, keep for seven years, destroy on schedule. If that is your job, the question is whether you want to follow Laserfiche to its cloud or move to a focused system that runs on your own servers or in the cloud, your choice.
Content Central is that focused system. It runs on your own Windows Server, IIS and SQL Server, or hosted in our cloud, and everything happens in a browser: capture, full-text and field search, workflow rules and approvals, electronic signatures, packets that show which documents are missing, retention and an audit trail. It does not try to be a forms platform or a portal.

Who should stay, who should look
Stay with Laserfiche if
- Moving your documents to a vendor’s cloud is fine, or already planned.
- You build custom web forms and processes on its designer, or run a public records portal.
- Your records program depends on file plans and certified records management.
- You use its connectors to SAP, Esri ArcGIS or Salesforce, or its mobile app in the field.
Content Central fits if
- You want the choice of your own servers or our cloud, without being steered from one to the other.
- The job is capture, search, approvals and retention, and you want it simple to run.
- You want signatures built in, from coworkers or anyone with an email address.
- You want AI kept private, working through your document processes, with custom AI tools built around how you work.
One loan file, moved
Take an example lending team with a Laserfiche template called Loan Document, fields for Loan Number, Borrower and Document Type, and folders per borrower. Here is the same work in Content Central.
- 01
Template to document types
The Loan Document template becomes a Mortgage catalog with document types such as Loan Application, Appraisal, Title Commitment and Closing Disclosure. - 02
Fields to global fields
Loan Number and Borrower become global fields shared by every mortgage document type, so one search finds the whole loan. - 03
Folders from the fields
A folder rule of Mortgage, then Borrower, replaces the hand-made borrower folders. - 04
A packet for the checklist
A packet template keyed on Loan Number lists the required documents. Each loan shows Complete, or Incomplete with what is missing, and a scheduled report lists every incomplete loan. - 05
Retention per type
Each document type gets its own schedule, with Retain Indefinitely for any loan under a legal hold.
What a move involves
Export
Laserfiche can export documents as a briefcase (an .lfb file with documents and their metadata, optionally with version history), download electronic files in their original formats, export pages as PDFs or images, and download folders as ZIP files. Briefcases are Laserfiche's own format, built for re-importing into Laserfiche, so a move to another system plans for files plus their template field values in a form Content Central can read. We work that out with you, and with your solution provider if you have one, before anything moves.
Field mapping
List each template with its fields. Text, number and date fields map directly to index fields; fields with a list of values become choice lists. Fields used across several templates, such as a loan or case number, become global fields.
Versions
Laserfiche keeps versions as metadata on a document and can include version history in a briefcase. Decide which documents need their history carried over. Most moves bring the current version and keep an archive export for the rest.
Processes
Rebuild each process as a Content Central workflow rule or approval process. Simple routing (on capture, send to an approver; over an amount, add a second) maps directly. Complex forms-driven processes deserve a look in the assessment; some are better kept simpler.
