What FlexiCapture is today
From ABBYY's own product pages and documentation, as of October 2026:
- ABBYY calls FlexiCapture document automation software purpose-built for the enterprise. It is available on premises, installed in your own infrastructure, or as an SDK for building your own applications.
- It classifies documents, extracts data and validates it, for structured, semi-structured and unstructured documents, including handwritten text recognition and natural language processing for contracts.
- ABBYY says it can scale to more than 3 million documents a day.
- The distributed version runs an Application Server (a web service in IIS), a Database Server, a Processing Server that spreads work across processing stations, and a Licensing Server with a protection key activated through ABBYY.
- ABBYY also lists FlexiCapture for Invoices and ABBYY Vantage, a cloud-first intelligent document processing platform, among its products. FlexiCapture is not marked as retired.
In short, FlexiCapture is a serious platform built for serious volume. The question is whether your team is using what it was built for.

Who should stay, who should look
Stay with FlexiCapture if
- You process very high volumes across many processing stations.
- Handwritten forms or long unstructured documents such as contracts are central to your work.
- Developers have built your own applications on the FlexiCapture SDK.
- You have an administrator or ABBYY partner who maintains your projects and Document Definitions.
CapturePoint 6 fits if
- Capture happens on one or a few PCs, without servers to look after.
- Your project was built by an integrator and new document types wait for their next visit.
- Your documents are mostly typed business paper: invoices, purchase orders, bills of lading, claims, HR forms.
- You want reading to happen on your own PC, with files going to folders, SharePoint, Google Drive or Content Central.
Setting up a new document type
In FlexiCapture, documents are processed according to Document Definitions. ABBYY's help describes two ways to locate fields on documents whose layout varies. FlexiLayout Studio lets a specialist write a formal description of the layout, and field extraction training lets an administrator load sample images per document type, mark field positions, and test the result. Both give precise control. Both are also work for a trained person.
CapturePoint 6 starts from the documents themselves. You choose a folder of real examples and it reads them, finds where each document starts and ends, groups pages into document types, and suggests fields and tables. Nobody draws zones.
After that, the job learns while you work. Each document you confirm becomes a verified answer, and CapturePoint 6 only adopts a change in how it reads when it measures better against those answers. It also notices new document types and new fields and suggests them, with the evidence.
Checks before anything leaves
Every serious capture tool needs a way to stop bad values reaching your accounting system. In CapturePoint 6 that happens on the review screen:
- Each field shows why it is waiting for review, if it is.
- Line-item tables are checked: when quantity times unit price does not match the amount, the line is flagged.
- Lookup lists, such as your vendor list, can check and fill values.
- You set how sure it must be before a document skips review, per job.
For a fuller list of what to check on invoices:
- Invoice line-item extraction: getting every row of the table out cleanly.
- Invoice OCR and data extraction: fields, accuracy checks and how to evaluate a tool.
How to run a fair test
Any capture product looks good on its own demo documents. Test both on yours.
- 01
Write down your current project
Document types, required fields per type, any lookups or validation rules, and where each document is exported. - 02
Pick a hard sample
A few weeks of real documents, including new vendors, multi-page invoices, poor copies and the forms people complain about. - 03
Set up CapturePoint 6 from it
Install the free trial on a Windows 10 or 11 PC. It starts on first launch with no form. Point automatic setup at the folder. - 04
Measure review, not just accuracy
Count how many documents a person had to touch, and how long that took, on a live batch from your scanner. - 05
Check the handoff
Confirm each destination is covered. If a system can read a folder of PDFs with a data file, it can take CapturePoint 6 output. For anything else, book a demo and we will look at it with you.
