Kofax, Tungsten and the names
If you search for Kofax today you will find new names. Here is what changed, from Tungsten Automation's own pages:
- Kofax renamed itself Tungsten Automation on January 16, 2024.
- Kofax Capture is now Tungsten Capture. The current documentation is for version 11.2.
- Kofax Express is now Tungsten Express, a scanning application to scan, index and export documents.
- Tungsten presents TotalAgility as delivering everything Capture provides, plus AI-powered extraction, no-code workflows and cloud options.
None of this means your Kofax Capture system stops working. Tungsten has not published an end-of-support date that we could find. The renaming is simply a good moment to ask whether the setup you have still matches the work you do.
What Tungsten Capture is built for
Tungsten describes Capture as an enterprise document scanning solution. According to its product page and installation guide:
- It handles anything from hundreds of documents a day to millions.
- It installs as a standalone station or as client/server. SQL Server Express is installed by default; high-volume sites can use SQL Server, Oracle or IBM DB2.
- Remote sites can connect through Tungsten Capture Network Server, and it can run over terminal services and Citrix.
- It includes more than 140 connectors to line-of-business, ECM, ERP, BPM and workflow systems.
- VirtualReScan (VRS) cleans, rotates, crops and straightens images before data is extracted.
- Licenses are activated with a serial number and product code, optionally with a hardware key.
That is real strength. A mailroom scanning around the clock across several sites, feeding a dozen systems, needs exactly this kind of architecture. It is also more machinery than a five-person accounts payable team needs to read its invoices.

Who should stay, who should look
Stay with Tungsten Capture if
- You run centralized or multi-site capture with dedicated operators and high daily volumes.
- Batches feed several back-end systems through export connectors or custom exports.
- You depend on client/server features, such as separate recognition, validation and quality control stations, or remote sites.
- You have an in-house administrator or partner who maintains your capture setup.
CapturePoint 6 fits if
- Capture happens on one or a few PCs in a department or small business.
- Your setup was built by a consultant years ago and nobody likes to change it.
- You want the person at the scanner to add a new document type without an administrator.
- Documents must be read on your own PC, and files should go to folders, SharePoint, Google Drive or Content Central.
If you are on Tungsten Express rather than Capture, the question is simpler. Express scans, indexes and exports. CapturePoint 6 adds document-type recognition and reading of fields and line items, so the index values come from the page instead of the keyboard.
Setup: batch classes vs a folder of samples
Enterprise capture platforms are configured by an administrator. In Tungsten Capture, work is organized into batch classes that set how batches are scanned, processed and exported, and Tungsten says the software can be trained to recognize your document types. That gives a great deal of control. In smaller offices it also tends to mean that a new form or a new export goes on the list for whoever maintains the system.
CapturePoint 6 starts the other way round. You point automatic setup at a folder of real documents. It reads the pages, works out where each document starts and ends, groups them into document types and finds their fields and tables.
From there the job improves as you work. Every document you confirm or correct teaches it, and it re-checks the documents still waiting, so confirming a few often clears more. Anything it is not sure enough about waits for a person with a plain "why review" reason, instead of going out on a guess.
How to evaluate a switch
Do not judge any capture product on a vendor's demo documents alone. Run your own paper through it and measure what matters to you.
- 01
List what your current setup really does
Document types, the index fields for each, how batches are separated, and where each document is released. Note any custom scripts. - 02
Collect a test folder
Real documents from the last few weeks, including the awkward ones: faxes, multi-page invoices, new vendors. - 03
Run automatic setup on it
Install the free trial on a Windows 10 or 11 PC and point setup at the folder. Compare the document types and fields it finds with your list. - 04
Scan a live batch
Use your own scanner and count how many documents need a person, and how long review takes. - 05
Check the destinations
Confirm each place documents must go is covered: folders with automatic naming, Content Central, SharePoint or OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or Nucleus One. Release scripts into a specific ERP may need a folder-and-data-file handoff instead; book a demo and we will look at it with you.
